About the island: Alonissos, Greece

Alonissos, Alonnisos,Ikos, Liodromia, Heliodromia – in the course of the centuries the island often changed it's name, but it still keeps it's very own character.

Pine forests, in which a lot of rare birds nest, lonely beaches, little harbours, tiny chapels, grottos are just a small part of all the beauty this paradise offers.

The Aegean island belongs to the Northern Sporades, is 62 km² large and is home to about 4.000 inhabitants. Alonissos also is part of the NMPANS (= National Marine Park of Alonnisos and the Northern Sporades), an unique example of ecological acting in Greece.

The richness and variety of wildlife and beautiful scenery justly characterise the PARK: The area is an important habitat for many species of fish, birds, reptiles and also mammals – even dolphins may me seen in the region.
The many-sided flora with its different herbs - which are especially liked by Greeks for the production of phytopharmaca, traditional sweets and liqueurs, for teas or just for cooking - will fill the hiker with entuhusiasm.
